MSG (monosodium glutamate acid) is a chemical extract typically added to foods as a flavor enhancer.

The problem with consuming MSG is that it’s difficult to convert and flush out of the body, which can lead to excessive glutamate in the brain and excessive stimulation of nerve cells.

Of course, it’s simple enough to avoid MSG when buying food, if ‘MSG’ isn’t on the label, then it must be safe...right?

The truth is, there are over 34 hidden names for MSG! Some you may be very familiar with:

  • Yeast extract

  • Soy protein concentrate / isolate

  • Whey protein concentrate / isolate

  • Gelatin (some sources)

  • Anything “hydrolyzed”

  • Vetsin

Hidden MSG is a danger in particular to those who have a sensitive intestinal wall, since if this type of glutamic acid is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream due to a breakdown of intestinal skin, a neuroexcitatory response can occur.

And avoiding MSG may be even harder than you think…

When MSG is acting as a flavor enhancer, it is required by the FDA to be listed on the ingredients. However, when MSG is acting as a processing agent, MSG does not require labeling.

Avoiding MSG can be hard, but if you pay attention to food labels and do your research, your health will thank you for it.
