Top 5 Foods to Feed Your Immune System

Right now is a great time to talk about some of my top nutrition recommendations when it comes to making sure your immune system is in tip top shape to fight anything that you might come in contact with!

So let’s talk about my top 5 foods to feed your immune system…

Before we start I think it’s important to note that I am not saying "eat these foods and you will never get Covid-19 but what I am saying is that if you do fall ill, with the Covid-19 or other infection, these foods will help you fight off the infection and get you on the road to wellness before you know it!

Smoothies

My personal go to for myself and my kiddos? Smoothies!! Make it with your favorite anti-oxidant rich fruit like blueberries and vitamin packed green leafy veggies (like spinach) to help support the immune system!!

Pro-tip: use berries as your fruit source to keep sugars low.

Protein

Next up, protein!! Grass fed, organic meats and wild caught fatty fish (albacore tuna, wild salmon, atlantic herring) are higher in omega 3 fatty acids to help support the immune system and make it stronger at fighting off an infection!

Pro-tip: Websites such as Butcherbox.com and ThriveMarket.com are great places to get meat if you can’t find it locally. Alternatively, there are still some Farmer’s Markets going and you can even contact a farmer directly to ask if they have grass fed organic meats!

Veggies

Try to eat foods like broccoli, cantaloupe, cauliflower, kale, kiwi, orange juice, papaya, red, green or yellow pepper, sweet potatoess, strawberries, and tomatoes which are high in Vitamin C. Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant and it supports a healthy immune system, especially when fighting off an infection.

Pro-tip: frozen veggies often retain more nutrients than fresh veggies. Don’t be afraid to stock up on frozen veggies to keep in your freezer!

Bone Broth

Another important nutrition hack to support your immune system is bone broth ! It has anti-inflammatory properties that helps heal the gut which improves our immune system strength since 70% of our immune system is in our gut! And an amino acid in bone broth, glycine, helps lower body temperature in case you get an infection. Bone broth is also packed with vitamins and nutrients to help directly support the immune system.

Pro-tip: Kettle and Fire from Thrive Market is my fave bone broth! It’s organic and has a great flavor to it!

Fiber

And I can't stress the importance of getting FIBER in your diet to help support the good bacteria in your gut!! So it is very important to not only support the beneficial bacteria, but also to avoid foods that might be inflaming your gut lining as well as making sure that you have the appropriate balance of good and bad bacteria in your gut.

Bonus: My Favorite Fiber

This is my favorite fiber supplement. I add it to my smoothies, and to my kids’ smoothies too! It’s a quick and easy way to boost my fiber intake.

Stay tuned because I'll talk about good/bad bacteria in the gut soon!
